Insider Threat can be best defined as: Acts of commission or omission by an insider who intentionally or unintentionally compromises or potentially compromises an organization's people or resources. These acts include, but are not limited to, espionage, unauthorized disclosure of information, and any other activity resulting in the loss or degradation of resources or capabilities.

The University's Insider Threat Program (ITP) exists to deter and detect any possible insiders and to enhance UVA's ability to counter the threat. This is accomplished through on-going security education, training and knowing what behaviors to look for and report. Insider Threat awareness is part of our overall security culture intended to protect our people, our intellectual property, and our reputation as a University.
